With the much anticipated Super Bowl LVI coming up we have one of the most likable quarterback and franchise matchups in history.
On one side, the Bengals starting quarterback will be Joe Burrow who’s playing in his first full season in the NFL. He also has quite the background, starting his college career at Ohio St. and then transferring to LSU before his junior year. His senior year at LSU was one of the most iconic individual seasons in college football history; he led the Tigers to an undefeated championship season while also winning the Heismann Trophy. He would be one of only 2 other quarterbacks to win both a National Championship and a Super Bowl, joining Joe Namath and Joe Montana. His rookie season, Burrow tore his ACL in week 11 ending his rookie season. The offensive line for the Bengals was one of the big offseason focuses but with the 5th overall pick in the draft, the Bengals selected Burrow’s former teammate at LSU, Ja’Marr Chase over the anticipated Penei Sewell, offensive lineman from Oregon. No one expected the Bengals to make it this far in the playoffs with the extremely young talent that headlines the team which makes them one of the most likable franchises in the league. Cincinnati also hasn’t been to a Super Bowl since 1989, so for fans without a dog in the fight, they are a popular pick in this year’s Super Bowl.
The Rams on the other hand, were definitely expected to make a deep run in the playoffs with the star-studded lineup including Matt Stafford, Cooper Kupp, Odell Beckham Jr., Aaron Donald, and Jalen Ramsey. When the NFC favorite, Packers, were upset by 49ers in the divisional round, the Rams had both an NFC championship and a Super Bowl on their minds. Matt Stafford has been one of the most underrated quarterbacks, since he stepped foot in the league. Being drafted 1st overall is the dream of many young football players but being drafted by the Lions didn’t provide a bright future for the young quarterback. Going into the 2021-22 season Stafford was part of the blockbuster trade with the Rams being traded to Rams in return for Jared Goff. In his first season with the Rams he leads them to a 12-5 season and a Super Bowl appearance, while the Lions finished 3-13-1 finishing at the bottom of the NFC North which comically summarizes the Lions franchise. Fans around the league are cheering on Stafford as he reaches his first Super Bowl in 13 seasons.
The Rams are 4.5 point favorites in Super Bowl LVI but here are our WLTL department picks for the Super Bowl.
