Hello, dear fan of WLTL!

Longtime fans may have been wondering where some of the podcasts and the beloved comedic podcast “Medium Rare” have gone. But fear not, because, come March of this year, Medium Rare and podcasting club will return, featuring Emmet Gripp and I on Wednesdays beginning after school.

Podcasting has been an essential component of WLTL since students have the opportunity to tap into their creativity more effectively than in the typical two-hour timeslot. While live shows are extremely important and the main draw for many, to WLTL, shows are not the only aspect of radio, as music talk shows are just one of the many parts of what makes WLTL the number one high school radio station in the nation.

Unlike music talk shows, podcasts provide much more room for experimentation and new ideas (both comedic or serious). Student-made podcasts can be about any topic that interests them, and can be entirely one-person segments, something informative, or free-flowing discussions between multiple hosts. All of which can be created, edited, fine-tuned, and polished to be in the running for a John Drury high-school radio award!

Podcasting also encourages students to important learn skills that wouldn’t necessarily be utilized in a two-hour music talk show segment that leaves little room for speaking for extended periods of time, with one of the most important being script writing. At Podcasting and Medium Rare club, students will learn from WLTL managers how to write excellent scripts that will then be recorded using the software Adobe Audition.

Adobe Audition is arguably the most important detail students must know when it comes to making podcasts, since that is where voice lines, music, and sound effects are recorded. Adobe Audition is key to making podcasts and improving their quality, as well as being incredibly useful as a WLTL manager (for any staff who wish to be WLTL managers one day), as it is used in almost every project made by managers (which then can be submitted for awards!).

Starting in March, when podcasting club and Medium Rare return, we hope to see WLTL staffers come and share their creative insights with the rest of WLTL and have the chance to put more pre-recorded, long-form material on the air. And we can continue to be the most award-winning high-school radio station in the nation! Also, if you’re wondering why our comedy podcast is called Medium Rare, it’s medium rare because it’s never well done!
